Kathmandu, Nov.2:  President Ramchandra Paudel has wished health, peace, prosperity and progress to all the Nepalis at home and abroad on the occasion of Nepal Sambat 1145.

In his message on the occasion of the Nepal Sambat 1145 today, President Paudel said that Nepal Samabt will further help strengthen the national unity by increasing the spirit of mutual harmony, tolerance, and brotherhood among all Nepali.

He said that I express believe that we will be inspired today to serve to society selflessly by taking inspiration from Shankhadhar Sakhwa, who worked endlessly and selflessly for public welfare and charity.

It may be noted that the Nepal Sambat is a lunar used by the Newari people in Nepal and it was in official use mainly during the Malla regime.  Sakhwa is credited with initiating the Nepal Sambat and today marks the commencement of Nepal Sambat 1145.

Shakhwa had initiated Nepal Sambat or calendar year in 937 BS (880 AD) by absolving the people of their debt during the rule of Lichchhavi King Raghav Dev. The erstwhile government in 2056 BS (1999) announced Sakhwa as a national luminary in recognition of his contribution, the message said.

“Nepali society is a civilized and tolerant society, our festivals and these traditions like this are making it stronger.” (Translated from RSS)
