Kathmandu, Sept 29: Minister for Water Supply Pradeep Yadav has directed the bodies concerned to promptly restore the water supply system damaged due to the continuous rain and to ensure the supply system.

Minister Yadav issued this directive convening an emergency meeting at the Ministry today. He informed the meeting that preliminary details have been received that the incessant raining of the last three days have caused damage worth approximately one billion rupees to the water supply system alone.

He directed the high officials concerned to collect the full details of the damage and restore the water supply system with priority. The Ministry Secretary and heads of various departments under the Ministry and other bodies were present in the meeting.

Minister Yadav said, "The incessant rains for three days have affected and damaged the water supply system in many parts of the country including in the Kathmandu Valley. It is the responsibility of our Ministry to manage the water supply. I urge all those concerned to restore the water supply system before the Dashain festival, working at war footing in the present adverse situation."

He also called attention of the agencies concerned to mobilize technical teams for carrying out water tests to prevent the affected people from water-borne infections like cholera that are likely to break out due to the flooding triggered by the rains.

The meeting discussed the damage inflicted on various water supply projects, including the obstruction to the water treatment process at Sundarijal Water Treatment Plant due to the murky water flowing from the Bagmanti River flow, which blocked the water supply system to the Kathmandu Valley, the halt in water supply due to the bursting of the penstock pipe of the Pharping-based hydropower project in Lalitpur, and the damage caused to important equipment at the electromechanical branch at Sundarighat, Lalitpur due to submerging.(RSS)
