Kathmandu, Sept 26: Minister for Home Affairs, Ramesh Lekhak, has pointed out the need to construct safe buildings for the development of safe settlements.

Addressing the 'Learning Exchange Workshop' organized by USAID here today, Home Minister Lekhak shared that Nepal has made timely revisions to the Building Code, learning a lesson from the Gorkha earthquake.

He placed emphasis on the need for capacity building of technical human resources at every local level to implement the revised Building Code effectively.

The Home Minister mentioned that the constitution has given special responsibility to local levels in the context of disaster management and three-tier governments have been doing their own responsibilities accordingly.

"Different organisations of government and non-government sectors are joining hands to fulfil their responsibilities in the disaster management sector", he underlined.

Minister Lekhak added, "USAID's Tayar Nepal-Improved Disaster Risk Management Project, has been making significant contributions to disaster risk reduction and management sector in the federation, provinces and local levels."

He thanked the US government for its support through the 'Tayar Nepal' project and expected further cooperation in disaster risk reduction and management sector in days to come. (RSS)
