Discussion with experts to increase water flow in Valley Rivers

Kathmandu, Aug 14: Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakash Man Singh has discussed with experts about increasing volume of water in the Bagmati, Bishnumati and other rivers of Kathmandu Valley.     

While discussing with the experts in the Ministry today, he has taken opinions about the short-term, mid-term and long-term plans to ensure flow of clean water in the Bagmati, Bishnumati and other rivers.     

"The stench is spreading because the water is not flowing in the river. We are thinking whether it would be better to increase the flow of water in the river even if it is done by boring in some places to see if there will be any decrease in the flow of water," Deputy Prime Minister Singh said, adding that there are good suggestions from experts in this regard.     

"Let's sit with the experts and discuss what else can be done in the coming days," said Maniram Gelal, Secretary of the Ministry.     

He further suggested increasing the flow of water immediately, from Sundarijal to Teku by boring water in some places, and from Shankhamul to Kupandol by storing water and conducting 'boating' operation.     

In the meeting, the experts gave their opinions about the technical feasibility of increasing the water flow in the rivers of Kathmandu during the dry season.     

Experts opined that the option of increasing the flow of water by boring can be used in the short term. Some experts are of the opinion that the impact of boring should be evaluated. Former Minister Ganesh Shah said that it is positive for the ministry to start discussions with experts on issues such as increasing the flow of water in the valley's rivers and managing the waste in the valley.(RSS)
