Collaborative efforts need to address transitional justice, clear backlogs of peace process: DPM Paudel

Patan, July 31: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel has said unity among all sides is imperative to complete transitional justice and clear backlogs of peace process.     

During a programme organized by the INSEC to confer 30th Prakash Human Rights Award in the federal capital on Wednesday, DPM Paudel reminded, "Although we ended conflict, we still have some works left to resolve. In order for the completion of the remaining tasks, cooperation among human rights activists, Nepal government and civil society is unavoidable, he added.     

The DPM also viewed the exercise of human rights is not possible without democracy, to which government is clear and firm. Accountable State helps ensure enforcement of human rights, he added.     

Founding chair of INSEC, Sushil Pyakurel, said time has come for all to be serious for addressing transitional justice.     

Massive public awareness is required for protection and promotion of human rights, according to NHRC member Lily Thapa.     

INSEC Chair Dr Kundan Aryal said government's perspective towards transitional justice was positive.     

Purnimaya Lama from Dapcha, Namobuddha municipality in Kavre district was conferred on the Prakash Human Rights Award.     

Lama has been fighting for transitional justice for long. She hoped she was not tired of struggling for justice. Her husband was killed by then rebels.     

The Award carries a purse of Rs 50,000.     

INSEC has also launched a south Asian human rights journal.     

The award was established after the founding General Secretary of INSEC, Prakash Kafle. He had died in a plane crash that occurred on Saun 16, 2049 BS while returning home from Sri Lanka.(RSS)
