By Our Correspondent,Chitwan, July 18: Chitwan District Court settled cases exceeding its target in the last fiscal year.

The  Chitwan District Court made public the details of the cases it settled in a year by organising a press conference on Tuesday.

It said that it settled 4,304 cases while it had a target to settle only 3,787 cases during the period.

Registrar Bishnu Acharya of the District Court said that the court now had no cases registered two years ago as it intensified works to settle the cases swiftly.

The court had 1,987 cases from the fiscal year 2022/23 and six cases from the previous fiscal year, and it settled all of the cases leaving no case older than two years.

Judge Nirmala Sharma Subedi has settled most of the cases in the court. She finalised 750 cases although she had a target to settle 540 cases in the last fiscal year.

The Court has a vacancy for eight judges but due to the lack of a suitable court building, only benches of seven judges are managed in the Chitwan District Court. Because of insufficient space and employees, we are facing various difficulties said Judge Daya Ram Dhakal.

Due to insufficient space in Chitwan District Court, five benches are set up in a shed having a roof of corrugated zinc sheets.

The roof used to leak in the rainy season and we had to deploy staff to collect the water in a pot, but now we have fixed the leaks, said Registrar Acharya.

“Only two benches are in the concrete building. We need 120 employees for seven benches but we are working with only 70 employees,” he added.

We have been taking the initiative to construct a new court building, but we are unable to add any building in lack of budget, said Judge Dhakal. He further said that there is no sitting room in the court, no space for parking, no waiting room for service seekers and no safe place to put the important papers and documents relating to cases.

Similarly, due to insufficient space, there is no bench for cases relating to children and all cases related to children are decided by the general bench led by Judge Ramesh Gyawali.
