Musicians set up Saru Sangeet Puraskar in memory of their mother

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, May 7: Lokpriya Saru Sangeet Ghar, a music and dance centre, has announced the establishment of  Saru Sangeet Rastriya Purasakar (Saru Music National Award) in memory of the late Saraswati Niraula. 

Addressing an event organised to mark the third anniversary of the music and dance training centre at Sanagaun, Mahalaxmi Municipality-5, Lalitpur, on Saturday, its Managing Director and musician Danny Niraula said that a revolving fund of Rs. 300, 000 had already been set up for the award. 

Every year, a senior artist who has contributed to the development of the music, song and dance sector will be presented the award of Rs. 25,505 from next year,  Niraula said.

According to him, an independent committee will be formed in April every year to select the awardee and the award will be presented in August.

Saraswati, the mother of musician Danny, died on August 2, 000 at the age of 40.

The prize is established jointly by musician Komal Niraula, husband of the late Saraswati, her sons Danny and Bhishan Niraula and daughter Jhuma Niraula, and their spouses. 

Danny’s father Komal Niraula, now a retired high school teacher in Ilam, is also a noted musician and singer whereas his brother Bhishan and sister Jhuma are too musicians. 

Popular musicians and singers Sheela Bahadur Moktan and Kunti Moktan were also present in the anniversary of the music and training centre. 

Currently, 72  students are studying in the Lokpriya Saru Sangeet Ghar established by Danny in Malaxmi-5 Lalitpur in 2020. 

In the anniversary, the students presented their songs.
