National Assembly election today

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Jan. 25: Election to the National Assembly is being held on Thursday. Voters have reached the provincial capitals of all seven provinces to cast their votes. 

Altogether 549 members of the provincial assemblies and 1,498 chiefs and deputy chiefs of local levels will cast their votes to elect 19 members of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament. 

Term of the 20 of the 59 members of the National Assembly is expiring in March this year, and 19 of them will be elected on Thursday while the remaining one will be nominated by the President. The Election Commission said that preparations and security arrangements for the poll were completed in all polling stations.  

Altogether 51 candidates from eight political parties are contesting the election. According to the Election Commission, voting will take place from 9 am to 3 pm at designated voting centres across the country.  Members of the National Assembly serve six-year terms with one-third of the total members retiring every two years.
