By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Jan. 12: Friday is the National Unity Day of Nepal. Every year, the government and people observe the day on the Nepali date of Poush 27, which also marks the day late King Prithvi Narayan Shah was born. Shah and his successors are credited with unifying Nepal by conquering the small and scattered states that existed within its borders.
On the occasion, President Ramchandra Paudel issued a message of greeting to all Nepalis inside and outside the country. "The unification campaign, initiated by Prithvi Narayan Shah and continued by our brave ancestors, laid the foundation for our independent, indivisible, sovereign, federal democratic republic of Nepal today," he said in the message. The President further hoped that the unity day would inspire everyone to work for the people's happiness and prosperity while emphasising the independence, sovereignty, geographical integrity and national unity of our country.
Similarly, Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav also extended best wishes and stressed that only national unity could deliver development, peace, prosperity and territorial integrity. "Quarrels, disputes and conflicts weaken states. That is why everyone must be aware and alert about this," he advised.
The Vice President felt that Nepal's beauty came from its diversity and hoped that this beauty could be integrated into the national spirit.
Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari also paid tribute to the great personalities who contributed to the campaign to build Nepal in her statement issued for the day.
