By Laxman Poudel,Bhairahawa, Dec. 30: More fugitives, who were on the run for many years, have been arrested after the Rupandehi Police Office launched the ‘clean sweep operation’ campaign for crime control.

The police have been continuously arresting the fugitives of theft, drug abuse and smuggling.

Mobilising separate police teams from the offices from across the district for 24 hours, the police have been arresting a large number of fugitives.

The Rupandehi Police has launched the campaign since December 17. Rupandehi District Police Office Chief and Superintendent of Police Bharat Bahadur B.K. said that in 13 days after the launching of the operation, several stolen motorcycles, people involved in them, absconding defendants, drug traffickers and drug abusers were taken into custody.

The police have arrested 102 absconding defendants and persons sentenced by the court. In total, the arrested persons have been sent to prison for 19 years, 11 months and 17 days, and a fine of Rs. 1.28 million will be collected from the fugitives.

According to SP B.K., 23 stolen motorcycles have been recovered and eight persons involved in them have also been detained by the police.

Four cases related to theft have also been registered in the court against those arrested in cases related to bike theft. The police said that 23 motorcycles of different brands and models including two Royal Enfield, one Bajaj Pulsar 150 cc, six Hero Splendor bikes, three Bajaj Pulsar 220 cc and one Yamaha FZ were seized.

It has also been found that the stolen bikes were first taken to India and brought to Nepal for use after changing their engine and chassis numbers, SP B.K. said.

He said that although the police were regularly working to control the illegal activities, after the launching of the campaign, more wrongdoers were arrested. Similarly, during the campaign, the police seized two cars with the same engine number and started an investigation.

During the operation, the police recovered 43 grams 220 milligrams of brown sugar, six ampoules of Diazepam, 68 ampoules of Phenergan, eight ampoules of Talgesic, 59 ampoules of Serizac, 60 ampoules of IPPL, and 16 capsules of proxy spas.

The police also arrested nine persons involved in drug use and transportation.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Manohar Prasad Bhatta and spokesperson for the DPO said that seven drug cases were registered in the district court.

"Police investigation has shown that in some cases, due to friends' incitement and family's negligence, the youth are involved in illegal activities such as drug trafficking, use and theft", SP B.K. said.

"For this, it seems that families should pay attention to prevent their children's activities from going down the wrong path," SP B.K said.
