The Rising Nepal turns 59 today. TRN has been a living witness to many vicissitudes of the nation's history. Many political systems and regimes came and went. At the time of its launching 58 years ago this day in 1965, TRN’s debutant editorial had spoken “About Ourselves”. In it, we had committed to 'give expression to those views which appear to us national rather than sectional.' We have dispassionately been living up to this motto with a spirit of the best of our ability and organisational strength. We have continued to stick to our original mission – to disseminate objective, truthful and impartial news and views to the readers. And upon completion of its 58 years of publication, TRN expresses its firm pledge to strive for yet better services in terms of contents in particular and other aspects of the paper’s design, distribution and the like. It is a pledge committed to the valued reading public.
Right from the start, the first English broadsheet daily hit successfully with the public, spreading its wings to different parts of the country, as it emerged as the most comprehensive information publication, covering not only domestic news with various datelines but also the international events. TRN stands out from all other papers in terms of catering unvarnished information to the public. It often refrains from publishing sensational, sentimental and dramatic contents, for such half-baked information only mislead and eventually harm the readers.
Authenticity, accuracy and credibility have been TRN's hallmark and also an asset that it has been honouring for decades. These are also the cardinal values of journalism and their importance has ever increased in digital era where the online news portals and social media have taken by the media landscape by storm, posing an existential threat to the traditional media. What more pesters the information highway is the widespread misinformation, disinformation and fake news, hampering the readers to get the factual and actual information.
In view of new challenges, TRN is embracing cross-cutting technology for the effective inputs and outputs. But we do not bank on basking on what has already been achieved. We do like to review and apprise valued readers of our relentless quest for fulfilling professional duties to the best of team ability and organisational resources. This way TRN hopes to consolidate its position for yet better contents in the years to come. The founder members of the editorial department as well as the management team deserve deep appreciation for the onerous task of engaging in the launch of the paper whose appetite for news was heavy, partly because of paucity of advertising requests but largely on account of the policy of attracting the largest number of prospective readers.
In the relentless quest for not just keeping the paper afloat but carving its own niche with enduring engagement of quality service, timely reshaping of the paper has been done periodically to tailor to the new trends and tastes. Renewed efforts have been made to have our own correspondents’ reports and with larger number of datelines. The feedback on this score has been encouraging, as is also reiterated by the copy sales in the highly competitive contemporary market flooded with no less than 15 broadsheets originating in Kathmandu alone. We are well aware that without regular review content, market and public tastes, no newspaper can hope to sustain the interests of existing readers, let alone attracting new ones. It is, therefore, our professional obligation to honestly and dedicatedly serve our readers along with the larger public.
