By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Oct. 6:Police has kept social media under tight surveillance for the past few weeks after religious tensions were witnessed in Nepaljung. Incidents disrupting the religious harmony were witnessed in Dharan of Sunsari and Malangwa of Sarlahi, few weeks back.
The Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police has recently increased its vigilance against the people and community liable for disrupting social and religious harmony and giving enticement to ethnic, religious and communal violence in various parts of the country.
Pashupati Kumar Raya, Superintendent of Police and Spokesperson for the Cyber Bureau said that the Bureau had issued separate statement on Wednesday and said that vigilance has been increased against those who are capable of disrupting ethnic and religious harmony in the society.
The Bureau has urged everyone to maintain social harmony, and warned not to misuse various social networking sites and online media that harms and disrupts ethnic, religious and communal harmony, national security and national unity. "The Nepal Police Headquarters and Cyber Bureau request everyone not to publish and display materials promoting social and religious disharmony,” said SP Raya. SP Raya said that the monitoring of online media and social networks has been increased and action will be taken against those who engage in such activities.
Cyber Bureau has said that if any material prohibited by the current law is found published or displayed, they will be prosecuted according to the law.
As Nepal doesn't have specific social media regulating law, Nepal Police mainly takes action against such people under the breach of the Electronic Transaction Act 2008 and other social offence act.
