Use Teej to create awareness on social anomalies: NA Chair Timilsina

By TRN Online, Kathmandu, Sept. 2: Chairperson of National Assembly (NA) Ganesh Prasad Timilsina has suggested utilizing Teej festival as an occasion to create awareness on social anomalies and ill practices by means of songs and dances.

"Teej is celebrated particularly as women's festival, and I suppose that it can be used as an occasion to raise awareness on women's empowerment," said the NA Chair expressing his best wishes at a Teej special programme organised by Parbat Bihadi Gaupalika Sewa Samaj.

Sabitri Sharma, a member of National Women Commission, expressed hope that Teej special programmes could promote protection and promotion of women's rights.

Women's situation is such that they have to suppress their guts but create smile in face. Such a situation should be changed so that they smile wholeheartedly and that the society is made free from women violence," she said.


NC leader from Parbat district, Arjun Joshi, also reiterated Chair Timalsina's view as he said Teej songs should include issues of social transformation.

Nilkantha Tiwari, CPN (Maoist Center) alternate central committee member, also made similar views as he too viewed that Teej related programmes should contribute to women empowerment.

Pravin Gurung, Chairperson of Bihadi Rural Municipality, expressed commitment to intensifying development works.

"Politicians should work for creating waves of development, and I hope I am doing the same in line with my capacity," he said.

The Samaj is a social organisation formed by people hailing from Bihadi and living in Kathmandu.


Bimal Raj Chettri, popular folk singer, created a musically lively ambiance with his songs prompting the participants to dance and enjoy the occasion.

Rajendra Tiwari of Nepali Congress, Tilak Kunwar, founding chairperson of the Samaj, Moti Kunwar, water resource expert, Dharmagat Bhusal, CPN (Maoist Center) leader, Bhuparaj Bhusal, treasurer of CPN (Maoist Center) Parbat Kathmandu Contact Forum, Dinesh Bhusal, education chief of Bihadi Gaupalika, among others, shared their best wishes during the programme.

Some forty people who took lifelong membership of the Samaj were also felicitated on the occasion.
