Nepali students win awards at international IT competition

Kathmandu, June 8: Nepali students earned awards at an international competition on artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and coding that was concluded in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia in May.  The competition had brought together participants from over 70 countries across the world. 

Six teams from Nepal garnered awards, while three other teams secured their places among the top 30. The Nepali students presented innovative approaches on the United National Development Goals (SDGS), addressing pressing issues such as air pollution, water contamination, advanced agricultural systems, and drugs management. 

The competition was held on May 16-17.  The participation of Nepali students in the international competition was facilitated by Nima Education Foundation, an organisation working in the area of information technology. 

It is said that a total of 98 Nepali students aged between eight to 18 years had participated in the competition. 

In recognition of the outstanding performance of Nepali students on the international stage, the Foundation honoured and rewarded the participating students and schools at a programme in Kathmandu on Sunday. 

Addressing the programme, Dr Sudan Jha, Head of the Department of Information Technology, Kathmandu University, said that AI, robotics and coding have gained prominence in recent years in Nepal. 

Stating that it is a matter of pride that Nepal is now in a position to produce competent IT workforce globally. He echoed the need to give greater priority to IT education in schools as per the demands of time.  

Foundation's CEO Nishcal Pradhan and Director Kiran Kumar Shrestha expressed their hope that Foundation's initiatives aimed at exploring IT potential and skills among students would help further boost the country's IT sector. 

The competition was attended by around 1,500 students from around the world, it is said.  (RSS)
