By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, July 29: President Ram Chandra Poudel extended his best wishes to all those concerned for the protection of tigers.
International Tiger Day is observed on July 29 every year, following the World Tiger Conference held in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2010.
“I am happy to know that Nepal has increased the number of tigers by almost three times in line with its commitment and showcased this achievement to the world during the second Tiger Conference held in Vladivostok, Russia, in 2022,” President Poudel said in a press release.
The increase in the number of tigers in Nepal is an inspiring accomplishment for conservationists and reflects the efforts made for tiger conservation, he added.
President Poudel emphasised the need to continue conservation activities by raising awareness about the importance of tigers and measures to reduce conflicts between tigers and humans.
“Tiger conservation is crucial for tourism promotion and the economic development of Nepal. I call upon the concerned bodies, the public, and conservation workers to work tirelessly towards sustainable conservation management,” he said.
“Nepal has played a leading role in tiger conservation globally, and I extend my special thanks to conservation workers, security personnel, local residents, media workers, and supporting organisations who are tirelessly working to save tigers,” President Poudel added.
He praised the efforts of related bodies in Nepal to control poaching and illegal tiger parts trade, contributing significantly to the global tiger conservation campaign.
“The development of national parks and wildlife reserves has helped secure the habitat of tigers. It is essential to take special initiatives to reduce conflicts between tigers and humans and lessen the dependence of local residents on forest products,” he said.
President Poudel expressed his hope that World Tiger Day 2023 would inspire everyone to achieve success in managing human-wildlife conflicts at the local level by protecting the habitat of tigers and generating income through wildlife-based tourism development.
