BY OUR CORRESPONDENT,Bhairahawa, July 21: The smell emanating from uncollected garbage has become a major headache for the residents of Siddharthanagar.
The failure of the municipality to collect garbage for a week has exacerbated the situation.
Despite repeated complaints and appeals from both locals and pedestrians, the municipality has not dispatched its vehicles to collect household and commercial waste.
Earlier, the municipality used to dump the garbage at the site near the Danda Khola of Ward No. 1. Since the site is next to a settlement in Ward No. 2, the locals had prevented the municipality from dumping the garbage there. The municipality has not been able to find an alternative disposal site and garbage mountains could be seen everywhere.
The foul odour has made it difficult for people to pass by the roads.
Deputy Mayor Uma Adhikari said that some of the political figures were inciting the locals near the dumping site to create an obstruction.
She said that even in the past when the Asian Development Bank tried to invest and build a waste recycling plant in Omsatiya, a municipality-owned land, some politicians did not allow them to work as planned. At present also the locals might be protesting under the influence of the same political figures.
She said, "We are trying to find an alternative dumping site. If we could not find it, we will try to reach an agreement with the locals."
