Parliament's performance hinges on consensus among parties- Speaker Ghimire

Kathmandu, July 1: Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire said parliamentary performance would hinge on mutual good will, consensus and coordination among the political parties.     

At a programme jointly organized by the Federal Parliament Secretariat and Former Parliamentarians Forum on the occasion of 65th Parliament Day here today, Speaker Ghimire said the political parties were the true driver of constitutional and parliamentary practices in multi-party system.     

The political parties have crucial role for parliamentary effectiveness also to address peoples' aspirations.     

'Today's need is to build a just society with economic, social and political development', he emphasized.     

Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar underlined the need to build a prosperous country with economic development which was only possible when all political parties joined hands for the same.     

On the occasion, former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal stressed the need to establish peace, stability, rapid development and reciprocal relations by ending corruption propping up across the country.     

"The parliament was dissolved last time. At the moment the people had hit the street for their rights. From now onward, no one should think about dissolving the parliament", Nepal added.     

Former Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota said the rights of the dalit, women, indigenous nationalities and marginalized communities should not be suppressed in the name of the constitutional amendment.     

Likewise, former Speaker Damannath Dhungana underscored political leaders should be held responsible to the people bearing in mind that people's resentment has increased of late.
