By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, June 10: Mercury is rising across the county, reaching the highest temperatures ever recorded in several stations in both the Terai and Hills as of Friday.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), four stations have reported the highest temperatures in recorded history. These stations are Damkauli, Okhaldhunga, Dharan Bazar, and Kanyam Tea Estate.
Damkauli registered the highest-ever temperature of all stations this year, measuring 44 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Similarly, the temperature in Okhaldhunga was recorded at 30.9 degrees Celsius, Dharan Bazar at 38.8 degrees, and Kanyam Tea Estate at 29 degrees, marking the highest temperature recorded so far on June 7.
Similarly, the temperatures in 14 stations have reached their highest point for the month of June. These stations include Gaur, Jaleshwar, Okhaldhunga, Lahan, Diktel, Rajbiraj, Pakhribas, Dharan, Chatara, Biratnagar, Tarhara, Kanyam, Phidim, and Damkauli.
According to the DHM, these stations have never recorded such high maximum temperatures in the first week of June before. This year, Gaur recorded a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record of 41.4 degrees Celsius set 31 years ago.
Jaleshwar also recorded a maximum of 41.5 degrees Celsius this year, while Lahan recorded a maximum temperature of 40.5 degrees Celsius. Similarly, Diktel Bazar recorded a maximum temperature of 29.8 degrees Celsius this year, Rajbiraj 41.8 degrees Celsius, Pakhribas experienced 31.5 degrees Celsius,
Chatara 39.4 degrees Celsius, Biratnagar 42.6 degrees Celsius, Tarahra 40.6 degrees Celsius, and Phidim 36 degrees Celsius, all as of Thursday, according to the DHM.
Sanjeev Adhikari, a senior meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecast Division under the DHM, stated that there is no chance of precipitation in the Terai until Monday, so the temperature might increase further.
On Friday, the temperature in Kathmandu was recorded at 32.3 degrees Celsius, Dhangadi at 40.5 degrees Celsius, and Bhairawa at 42.5 degrees Celsius.
