By Chitra Mijar,Sindhupalchok, June 9: Tembo Lama, a remarkable singer, possesses an undiscovered talent that resonates throughout the settlements of the Himalayan region.
His melodious songs are often played during religious and cultural festivals.
His songs like ‘Hammai Leela,’ ‘Tyai Sanu Jureli,’ ‘Daurama Suruwal Chhirke Ra Mirke’ are immensely popular in the Sherpa community.
These songs have a unique flavour, with their Sherpa rhythms and music complemented by Nepali lyrics.
Tembo Lama is proud of his ancestry, as he is a descendant of Ngazen Shekya Sangbo, a revered Lama guru from Tibet in China who played a significant role in constructing the Bouddha Stupa in Chabahil, Kathmandu.
Situated along Nepal-China border within Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality-1 Listi, Paau Gumaba stands as the permanent residence for Tembo, a prominent figure hailing from the powerful Hyolmo
Chhiri Lama dynasty.
Tembo's father Jamling and grandfather Furkel are both Lama gurus.
Born to a Sherpa family that actively participates in religious and cultural rituals, as well as the chanting of mantras, Tembo is adored by all.
Accompanied by his wife, three daughters, and one son, Tembo travels to various Sherpa settlements to share his melodious songs.
For the past two decades, Tembo has been using his singing talents to serve the community while maintaining the occupation of a farmer. Not driven by financial gain, he refuses to accept money for his performances.
Tembo's fame has reached beyond the borders of the Himalayas. The Sherpa community in South Korea, Japan, Iraq, and others invite
him to sing.
Recognising the need for social progress, Tembo established the Panchgaun Sherpa Society which organises campaigns and training sessions to promote religion, culture, and
social upliftment.
His efforts have resulted in the construction of bridges, roads, monasteries, access to clean drinking water, and collective farming initiatives.
His songs serve as a backdrop while engaging in these community-building endeavours.
Tembo's musical journey began in 2003, and since then, he has recorded 22 songs. These compositions find a regular place in the daily playlist of Ani Gumba, a community comprising 300 households.
Tembo not only sings at Ani Gumba but also actively assists the Lamas and Anis in their daily life.
Through his philanthropic endeavours, Tembo has made a significant impact. In collaboration with SOS Children's Village, he provided accommodations and food to 450 earthquake victims for one year.
In essence, Tembo Lama's enchanting songs have touched the hearts of many, transcending geographical boundaries.
