By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Apr.20: Gorkhapatra Daily has topped the ranking of news coverage of women politicians, according to a research.The research, conducted by the Media Advocacy Group on the coverage of women politicians in the mainstream media based in Kathmandu for three months from January 2023 to March 2023, showed that women politicians received only 6.04 per cent coverage in the Nepali media.
The Rising Nepal ranked second in terms of covering news on women politicians, read the research.The total coverage of women politicians in the Gorkhapatra was 25.5 percent during the period, and that in The Rising Nepal was 17.7 per cent.
The research studied eight daily newspapers based in Kathmandu. The coverage in The Kathmandu Post was 12 per cent, Kantipur 11.5 per cent, Annapurna Post 12.5 per cent, Naya Patrika 8.3 per cent, Nagarik 5.7 per cent, and The Himalayan Times 6.8 per cent.
Of the 192 published news stories related to women politicians, 55 per cent was positive news, 42 per cent negative and three per cent were neutral.
According to the research, pictures of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, former Foreign Minister Bimala Rai Paudyal and Minister for Communication and Information Technology Rekha Sharma received more priority.
