blog

Sports icons are persons who inspire us with their incredible skills, hard effort, and commitment. They achieve several extraordinary things that set them apart from the rest of us. Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pele, was an iconic footballer of our time who differentiated himself from his colleagues and football players with his tremendous talents, hard work, drive, and commitment. Pele, who died last Thursday after a lengthy illness, is regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time. He started playing soccer at an early age after being born in 1940 in Três Coraçoes, Brazil. He made his professional debut at the age of 15 and went on to have a long and successful career spanning more than two decades.

Pele, during his playing days, was an integral part of the Brazilian national team, with which he participated in four World Cups and won three of them in 1958, 1962, and 1970. Many of his admirers will never forget his incredible goal celebration, which included a jump with his right fist extended high over his head. The first black celebrity in Brazil, his impressive achievement earned him the moniker Black Pearl. He appeared in 114 matches for Brazil and is the country's all-time top scorer with 95 goals. In official matches for Brazil, he has 77 goals. On the pitch, he was unrivalled in terms of speed, dribbling skills, and scoring prowess. He was also a superb passer and team player, making him a complete player who could contribute to all elements of the game. Pele had a good club career as well as a successful national team career, playing for Santos F.C. in Brazil and the New York Cosmos in the United States. With both sides, he won multiple leagues and cup trophies and was voted South American Footballer of the Year three times.

Pele's contribution to the "beautiful game" as football is known among its followers, is huge. He is credited with popularising and promoting the sport to a worldwide audience. His on-field skill and talent inspired numerous young players throughout the globe, and he remains a famous figure in the sport to this day. In 1997, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II knighted him. Because of his fame and prominence, the then US President Ronald Reagan had addressed the Brazilian football star by introducing himself first: "My name is Ronald Reagan; I am the President of the United States. However, there's no need for you to introduce yourself since everyone knows who Pele is." Pele will always be loved and respected as a soft-spoken and affable human being in addition to being an all-time great football player.

Pele is also well-known for his humanitarian initiatives, having collaborated with organisations such as UNESCO, UNICEF, and the United Nations to promote children's rights and education, among other things. He has also had multiple business enterprises and published several books on his life and work. His contributions to the game will be remembered for years. On the field, his brilliance, elegance, and charm made this football legend a delight to watch and a role model for millions of fans across the globe. We extend sincere sympathies to Pele's grieving family, the Brazilian people, and all football lovers, who will undoubtedly remember the legendary player for generations to come for his exceptional abilities and accomplishments.
