Nepalgunj, Aug. 3:  Women and children of Terai and hilly districts of western Nepal are more vulnerable to trafficking.

Organisations working to prevent and control human trafficking have said women and girls of western region are at the high risk of trafficking due to illiteracy, poverty and lack of awareness.

According to the report, released by the regional office of Maiti Nepal in Banke, the number of people being trafficked has increased rapidly in the last 11 years. In the fiscal year 2020/21, a total of 214 people were identified as vulnerable and rescued from the Jamunaha checkpoint while 627 women and girls have been rescued in 2021/22.

The number of women and girls rescued has doubled in the fiscal year 2021/22. Out of 627 people rescued in the previous fiscal year, 623 people were rescued from the border and rehabilitated back to the family while remaining four were sheltered at Maiti Nepal, said Keshab Koirala, programme coordinator of Maiti Nepal Nepalgunj.

Koirala said for the last one decade Nepalgunj has become a transit point for human trafficking.

Since the stern measures have been initiated by both the government and non-government agencies, the numbers of victims being rescued from the border points have also increased.

A majority of the victims, who were rescued are from Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces and all of them are teenagers, the report shows.

The report further stated that a total of 11 people, who were subjected to labour and sexual exploitation have been rescued in the last fiscal year.

Koirala said out of 702 complaints filed by the family of those who went missing, 285 people were rescued while the whereabouts of 427 were still unknown. Organisations working against the human trafficking have expressed their concern over the delay in introducing procedure for rescuing trafficking victims.
