Meteorologists have forecast heavy rainfall in all the provinces from Tuesday night as the monsoon spreads across the country. This year’s monsoon system reached Sudhur Pashim on Sunday, 22 days after the monsoon entered Nepal. The monsoon entered Nepal through Province 1 on June 5 this year, eight days ahead of the scheduled date. The influence of monsoon winds has become more active across the country as it enters the far western provinces, said Sujina Shakya, a meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), Meteorological Forecasting Division.
Nepal has been spending billions of rupees in the import of cereals and vegetables for consumption. According to the trade statistics of the Department of Customs, the country imported cereals worth around Rs. 70 billion during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year 2021/22. During the review period, rice and paddy worth Rs. 45.28 billion, wheat worth Rs. 6.29 billion and maize worth Rs. 17.83 billion were imported. The import of rice and wheat slightly decreased in the review period compared to the same period last fiscal year.
Apples have started to yield fruit within two years of planting at the farm of one Bir Bahadur Rawal of Khaptad Chhededaha Rural Municipality-1, Kanda of the district. Fuji, Gala and Golden varieties of apples brought from Italy started fiving fruit within two years of planting in February, 2021. Bir Bahadur Rawal, a local of Khaptad Chhededah-1, Kanda, said that 1,300 new plants of apple trees were planted with the grant of the Agriculture Knowledge Centre and 700 new plants with his personal investment.
Narcotics abuse has been one of the most serious social problems worldwide despite public awareness campaigns in place to prevent this scourge. As per the 2021 World Drug Report unveiled by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), about 275 million people used drugs in 2020 and more than 36 million suffered from substance use disorders. What is more worrying is that the report has hinted at a rising number of youths being addicted to various drugs. When such persons begin using narcotics, there are higher chances for them to become addicted later in life. They are likely to reel from different health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease and sleep disorders during their adulthood. As drug abuse can affect the users’ physical and mental development processes in a negative way, they could choose to make wrong decisions. They are more likely to get involved in risky activities like unsafe sex, brawling and perilous driving.

Nepal Oil Corporation has been constantly hiking prices of POL products and LP gas for the last few months. Last week, the government oil monopoly hiked the price of petrol by Rs. 21 per litre and the price of diesel oil and kerosene (paraffin oil) by Rs. 27 per litre each. Likewise, the price of aviation fuel for domestic airlines was increased by Rs. 19 per litre, whereas the price of aviation fuel for international airlines was increased by USD 100 per kilolitre. With this, petrol cost Rs. 199 per litre, and diesel oil and kerosene Rs. 192 per litre each.

Tribhuvan Army Club finished team champions of the 44th National Athletics that concluded at Dasarath Stadium, Kathmandu on Sunday. Army topped the medal tally with 18 gold, 12 silver and five bronze medals. AFP Club bagged nine gold, six silver and eight bronze medals to remain at the second position. Bagmati Province trailed at third place with three gold, two silver and six bronze medals.

Adding madness to travel and adventure, the show’s versatile actor Shahi will introduce different places in five different episodes. The drama of Pachali Bhairav was made public in a form of a book at Kaushi Theatre of Teku. The book was jointly launched by Chandra Man Munikar writer, director and dance teacher and Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Kathmandu is the centre for tangible and intangible heritages so new generation would know about the drama after the publication of this book, Deputy Mayor Dangol said. The tragic love story of Pachali Bhairav and Rukmani was staged for nine days at the Kaushi Theatre in Teku from November 11, 2021.
Teachers of upper Humla started to teach with alternative medium after they faced the shortage of textbooks even one and a half months after the the academic session began. Amar Bahadur Shahi, headmaster of Mansarobar Secondary School of Simkot Rural Municipality, informed that teachers who know how to use internet have started teaching by downloading curriculum from the internet now.
Locals of Bhajani Municipality of Kailali district have started crossing bridgeless Kandra River at risk despite floods. According to the locals, crossing the river without a bridge during monsoon has always been an ordeal for them. Every year, flood hits the Kandra River during monsoon but locals are bound to cross it by risking their life as it is the only option of continuing their livelihood. It has been 11 years since the construction of a bridge over the river started but it has not been completed yet. Locals stressed that they struggled to cross the river in other seasons as well but it turned far dangerous during the monsoon.
World Bank's Managing Director Mari Pangestu expressed commitment on behalf of the bank to support Nepal’s energy sector development through clean sources including hydropower and cross-border power trade. The WB recognises the transformative potential of the proposed Upper Arun Hydro Electric Project, she said while concluding her five-day visit to Nepal. The support would be provided as the part of achieving Green, Resilient, and Inclusive Development (GRID), the WB said in a statement.
A preliminary agreement has been reached for the investment of Rs. 245 in various startup businesses at the CNIYEF Nepal StartUp Fest 2022 organised by the Young Entrepreneurs' Forum of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) the other day in Kathmandu. An initial investment agreement has been signed with the successful startup that reached the final of the competition. The YEF had called for investment proposals including projects to participate in the Startup Fest.
A workshop on the Status of Mother Tongue Journalism in Nepal has concluded in Kathmandu on Sunday. Speaking at the conclusion of the workshop, Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Sunita Dangol said that preservation of mother tongue is the concern of all. The workshop was organised by National Forum of Newa Journalist-Kathmandu Chapter. She stressed on the importance of journalism in different mother tongues to preserve and promote them as languages, arts and cultures of various ethnic groups have been the national pride of Nepal.
