BY A STAFF REPORTER Kathmandu, June 27: A workshop on the Status of Mother Tongue Journalism in Nepal has concluded in Kathmandu on Sunday.
Speaking at the conclusion of the workshop, Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Sunita Dangol said that preservation of mother tongue is the concern of all. The workshop was organised by National Forum of Newa Journalist-Kathmandu Chapter. She stressed on the importance of journalism in different mother tongues to preserve and promote them as languages, arts and cultures of various ethnic groups have been the national pride of Nepal.
Stating that language and script should be brought into practice hand in hand she urged concerned people to come up with the research and finding especially on scripts.
In the workshop, working papers on the status of journalism in Nepali, Maithili, Rajbanshi, Meche, Tamang, Limbu, Magahi, Tharu, Sanskrit, Sherpa, Urdu, Dhimal, Jirel, Rajbanshi, Doteli, Chamling, Awadhi and other languages were presented.
The speakers gave presentations on the history of those languages, rise of journalism, problems, challenges and the future possibilities.
A journal on the status of journalism in 38 languages will be published later. Likewise, outgoing Mayor
of KMC Bidya Sundar Shakya said that he has planned to extend the implementation of Nepal Bhasa curriculum
up to grade 8 in the schools of KMC to grade 12. Similarly, outgoing Deputy Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi said that KMC has got the youngest deputy mayor from the last local level election. She assured her support if Deputy Mayor Dangol would come up for any assistance.
