The Rong Municipality of Ilam is going to brand generations-old indigenous dishes, Gundruk and Sinki (fermented leafy green vegetables). Aiming to uplift the living standards of the local farmers, the rural municipality has forwarded its plan to branding Gundruk and Sinki. Presenting its policy and programme at the 13th rural municipal assembly, the rural municipality announced its plan to implement the task.
Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Dilendra Prasad Badu, has informed that the government is in the process to formulate some policies and programmes to support the startups which would be announced soon. Speaking at CNIYEF Nepal StartUp Fest 2022 organised by the Young Entrepreneurs Forum of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) in the Capital on Saturday, he said that the government has the responsibility to create an environment where young innovators and entrepreneurs thrive. "Success of startups will not only benefit the entrepreneurs but the entire society. You should prepare yourself to present your ideas and business at the international level," said Minister Badu, while pledging government support to the young entrepreneurs attending the event.
In the geographically remote Chure area of Sarlahi, people have started using stretcher to carry the sick after the vehicles stopped running. Chure people have been left with stretchers to visit hospitals after the road by the river was blocked by the flood. Ishworpur, Lalbandi, Hariban and Chure area of Bagmati Municipality of the district have been facing this problem.
Of a total of 928 libraries, which were opened across the country since 1917, only 227 have been found to be operating properly. According to a survey conducted by Read Nepal and Shanti Volunteer Association in coordination with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology showed that 681 libraries have been shut down over the years. The surveyors had prepared a list of 60 questions based on which the survey was conducted.

Some cholera incidences have been reported in Nepal with the beginning of monsoon. It is endemic to many parts of the country, including the Kathmandu Valley. Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection. If left untreated, it can be fatal within hours. It has been estimated that each year there are 1.4 to 4 million cases of cholera, and over 100,000 deaths worldwide due to cholera (WHO, 2022).
Hindu and Buddhist societies are more specific on the division of seasons of a year compared to that of Christian ones. In the East, the whole year is divided into six seasons -- Barsa, Grisma, Basanta, Hemanta, Sharad and Shishir. But, the West has only four seasons -- winter, spring, summer and autumn/fall.
Believe it or not, 50 per cent of sugar consumed in an agrarian country like Nepal is imported. Although the Morang Sugar Mills Limited, the first sugar mill in Nepal, was established in 1947, which led to commercial sugarcane cultivation, Nepal still heavily depends on imports to meet sugar demand. Yes, once in 2003, Nepal exported raw sugar to EU countries under the Everything but Arms (EBA) trade preference. This means Nepal had become self-reliant in sugar. But today, the situation is otherwise. Sugar shortage often haunts the Nepalis during festival seasons.
Farmers in Morang used to feed ripe pumpkins to cows and buffaloes until a few years ago. But now they are making money by selling them to traders and industries. They said they are producing pumpkins worth Rs. 40,000 per bigha. Farmers said that the pumpkins they sowed in the month of March together with maize have been a source of good income. Moreover, they do not have to take the pumpkins to market, traders themselves arrive in the village to purchase the ripe pumpkins.
A community children’s hospital, set up about a decade-and-a-half ago, has been in a state of neglect for four years now. Locals were happy after the news that a hospital was soon going to be operated in their neighbourhood made headlines. But that happiness didn’t last long. Established in Ghorahi Sub-Mertopolitan City, Dang, in 2009 to provide pediatric specialist services, the hospital went out of service in less than a year of its operation. After that, its building was used by the temporary police station for six years.
Madhes Province government has decided to demand a helicopter for rescue missions during monsoon-induced disasters. The decision was taken by a meeting of the disaster management executive committee under Madhes Province’s Home and Communication Ministry on Thursday. “Experts have suggested that floods in the Saptakoshi, Kamala and Bagmati among other rivers can cause more damage. Similarly, Chure region is also at a great risk. The helicopter will be used for immediate rescue,” said Bharat Prasad Sah, Minister for Home and Communication.
Concerned stakeholders from Nepal and India have decided to work jointly against the rising terror of human trafficking through the open border between the two countries. A joint meeting was held to formulate necessary plans against human trafficking between Nepali and Indian authorities in Bahraich, in Uttar Pradesh, India on Thursday. The meeting was facilitated by Plan Nepal, UNESCO-Banke and DEHAT, an India-based organisation.
The country is going to receive heavy rainfall along with thunder and lightning in most parts of the country on Saturday. This year's monsoon system has activated in Province 1, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali Provinces since Friday. "The monsoon is yet to be activated in Sudhur Paschim," said Hira Bhattarai, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

COVID-19 vaccines cut the potential global death toll by more than half in the first year they were available, according to a study published Thursday in The Lancet Infectious Diseases. The study modelled the spread of the disease in 185 territories and countries and found that without COVID vaccines, 31.4 million people would have died of the disease between December 2020 and 2021. While the pandemic has taken a devastating toll around the globe, with more than 3.5 million deaths since the first vaccine was administered in December 2020, the study estimated that vaccinations also prevented 19.8 million deaths.
