Maker, Tech Spaces launched in Madhes schools

blog

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, May 23: Save the Children Nepal, with support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), has launched Maker Spaces and Tech Labs in schools in Bara, as part of the INSPIRE project. The initiative aims to strengthen digital literacy, innovation, and quality education among students in Madhes Province.

The Maker Spaces are designed as interactive STEAM learning environments where students can explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through hands-on activities.

Equipped with digital tools, robotics kits, and creative learning materials, the spaces encourage creativity, critical thinking, experimentation, and problem-solving beyond traditional classroom methods.

A Technology Demonstration Event was also organised, where students from seven schools interacted with technology-based organisations, including the Robotics Association of Nepal, Karkhana Samuha, and Smart Cheli.

Demonstrations included robots, drones, circuit models, hologram artwork, and STEM learning kits, helping students experience practical learning through technology.

KOICA Country Director Mooheon Kong said the initiative would create greater opportunities for students to engage in STEM and digital education. Ayush Shrestha Joshi of Save the Children Nepal highlighted that such spaces help children develop innovative thinking and practical solutions for challenges faced in their communities and schools.

Students expressed excitement about the new learning approach, stating that education has become more engaging and practical compared to traditional book-and-blackboard teaching.

The five-year INSPIRE project, launched in 2025, is being implemented in the districts of Bara and Mahottari.

In its first year, the project has renovated and constructed 45 classrooms, built 16 water and sanitation facilities, trained 188 teachers in inclusive education, supported nearly 12,000 children with remedial learning, enrolled 102 adolescents in vocational training, and established seven Maker Spaces and Tech Labs in schools across the target districts.
