Parasi, May 12: Women in Ward- 10 of Bardaghat Municipality in western Nawalparasi have recently been increasingly drawn towards traditional musical instruments.

This enthusiasm has emerged following a 15-day training programme on playing the madal and harmonium, organised with the objective of nurturing women’s musical talents while promoting the preservation of art and culture.

The training was conducted with financial support from Ward- 10 of Bardaghat Municipality and organised by the Panchanagar Community Development Centre.

Most of the participants said that it was their first opportunity to learn to play musical instruments.

Despite their daily household responsibilities, the women managed to make time to participate in the training. They shared that the programme has boosted their confidence to actively take part in religious rituals, bhajan-kirtans and social events in the future.

According to Ward Chairperson Raju Mishra, “Women should not be confined solely to household responsibilities and the four walls of the home.

Real social development is possible only when they are connected with art, culture and skills. This training has provided an opportunity to bring out the hidden musical talents among women.”

Mishra further said, “Today, our sisters have gained the confidence to take leadership in bhajan-kirtans and social programmes by playing musical instruments themselves, and this is a major achievement for us.”

He added that since music spreads positive energy and harmony within society, the ward office will continue to prioritise such effective programmes in the future for the preservation of local art and culture as well as the development of women’s capacities.

According to trainer Lok Mijar, participants were given practical training throughout the programme on the basic skills of playing instruments, rhythm and beat, vocal practice and musical performance.

The Panchanagar Community Development Centre has said that it will continue to carry forward programmes focused on capacity building and socio-cultural preservation, targeting women and youth in the community in the coming days. Such programmes have been prioritised with the belief that music spreads positive energy, harmony and a sense of togetherness in society.

Alongside Bardaghat, neighbouring Sunwal Municipality has also provided basic madal training to women, sending a new message of cultural awakening across the district.
