Siraha, April 21: Police have taken 22 inmates into custody following renewed unrest inside Siraha Prison.
The action was carried out this morning after the group allegedly tried to take control of the prison’s internal administration.
Two days ago, a group of prisoners forced out a prison guard, Prem Chaudhary, in an apparent attempt to take control of the administration. The inmates have been accused of forming factions and disturbing the peace inside the facility.
In response to the growing tension, security forces stepped in to restore order, it is said. Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramesh Bahadur Pal from the District Police Office confirmed that a police operation was carried out in the morning to maintain security and discipline within the prison.
Police said the 22 inmates were taken into control to prevent any further untoward incidents. Preparations are currently in progress to transfer them after completing the necessary legal and administrative procedures.
About three months ago, police had seized a home-made pistol along with two rounds of bullets inside the prison. Following that incident, a guard and 12 inmates were arrested. The arrests had triggered protests by prisoners, who demonstrated for two days against the police action.(RSS)
