blog

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Feb. 24: Minister for Home Affairs Om Prakash Aryal inaugurated the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Analytics Cell (AI-AAC) at the Nepal Police Headquarters in Naxal during a ceremony on Monday evening. During the event, Minister Aryal observed the operations of the cell and received briefings on its functions, applications, and potential utility.

The inauguration was attended by Home Secretary Raj Kumar Shrestha, Inspector General of Nepal Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki, Armed Police Force IGP Raju Aryal, Additional Police Inspectors General, senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, and deputy inspectors general of police.

The establishment of the AI-AAC comes amid rising challenges to national security, crime investigation, prevention, and control posed by cybercrime, misinformation and disinformation, organised criminal networks, financial fraud, and digital campaigns aimed at creating social instability.

The cell utilises Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), Machine Learning, Predictive Analytics, and Automation to create a high-tech, strategic, and forward-looking infrastructure under the Nepal Police Headquarters.

The key objectives of the AI-AAC include institutionalising and strengthening artificial intelligence, developing proactive intelligence and early warning systems, enhancing cognitive security and information integrity, reinforcing cyber and digital crime intelligence, developing AI-assisted investigation and judicial-grade digital evidence systems, detecting AI misuse and building defensive capabilities, and expanding descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and analytical frameworks.

Using this AI cell, the Nepal Police have already taken legal action against individuals involved in the dissemination of misinformation in five incidents across Banke, Kanchanpur, Sunsari, Salyan, and Dang districts. Central Police Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General Abi Narayan Kafle said, “It is essential for citizens to exercise caution when using social media. The Nepal Police remain vigilant in bringing those spreading false information to justice.” He also urged the public to follow the law and provide accurate personal identification when required.
