Vlogs Going Mainstream

blog

Once a niche hobby, vlogs have now become a mainstream activity. Vlogs, which stand for video blogs, have changed the way people create and consume online content. Today, if you scroll through social media, you will come across a deluge of personal or professional vlogs. And they cover a wide range of subjects from beauty and cosmetics, health and medicine, pets and animals, to exercise, fitness and diet, science and technology, arts and crafts, culture and entertainment, among others.

Given the impact vlogs have on online platforms, it could help to dig deeper into their history. Vlogs mainstreamed in the 2000s era through the rise of YouTube. Initially, they were short, single-take, unedited videos shot from a webcam on a computer or a laptop. In the beginning, YouTube started off as a free and accessible site for users to post or view videos. And it remains free even today, although it is rife with ads and premium membership offers.

As the internet speed upped with the advancement in technology, the quality of videos also increased, leading to the rise of vlogs. It has to be mentioned that in the 2010s, social media boomed, which had a significant role in the creation of careers such as influencers and content creators. At first, photos and pictures were all the rage but once Instagram was acquired by Facebook (now Meta) and there was a steep competition from video platform TikTok, vlogs really took off.

Today, vlogs have become the bread and butter of influencers and content creators who consistently create trends. Fashion, beauty and celebrities are what sell in content. However, vlogs aren’t just for entertainment; they can also be a source of education and learning. For example, if you want to learn a foreign language, you could improve your skills by watching language vlogs on YouTube. Or, you could watch shorter videos on Instagram, Facebook or TikTok. Content creation has become a viable career option, which shows how lucrative they have become. It certainly helps that it can be carried out from the comfort of homes. But it requires significant brainstorming to create unique vlogs that stand out among the sea of posts on the online platform.

While content creation can be a source of passive income in this era of hustle culture, it can also cause burnout as content creators chase the endless trends to stay relevant. It can be taxing to pursue fads and trends while also remaining authentic and engaging. Often, creators resort to sensational and controversial content for views, which lowers the bar when it comes to its social and cultural implications. Another concern is privacy as content creators and influencers put a large portion of their lives out in the form of vlogs. Many have admitted to being trolled and subjected to hate. Here, transparency has to be aligned with personal space and security.

In an age of the internet, social media and smartphones, there continue to be technological breakthroughs that further pledge to improve the online experience of users. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) advances, it has already changed the way vlogs are created and consumed. In the future, too, vlogs could be a source of entertainment, information and communication in an even more extensive and impactful manner.
