By Our Correspondent,Lekhnath, Jan. 15: The number of waterbirds found in lakes and wetland areas of the Pokhara Valley in Kaski has increased, while the number of species has declined.

According to the results of the Asian Waterbird Census, which concluded on January 9, the total number of waterbirds has increased by 10.2 per cent compared to 2025, while species diversity has declined by 13.2 per cent.

Manashant Ghimire, regional coordinator of the Pokhara Waterbird Census said, 53 species were recorded in 2025, while the number dropped to 46 species in 2026.

The total bird count increased from 3,436 to 3,786, which he described as an encouraging sign. “In terms of locations, Rupa Lake has shown the most positive trend,” he said, adding that both species diversity and bird numbers have increased there.

Mai Lake has also recorded an increase in both species and total bird numbers. These areas are considered to have relatively favourable habitat conditions. In contrast, Dipang, Gunde and Khaste lakes in Pokhara have seen declines in both species diversity and bird numbers.

At Dipang Lake, the bird population has dropped by around 59 per cent. Phewa Lake, the largest lake in Pokhara Metropolitan City, remains the most important habitat in terms of total bird numbers.

However, species diversity there is also declining.

Experts said that a rise in overall bird numbers alongside declining species diversity indicates that only a few species are becoming dominant.

Jhalak Chaudhary, another regional coordinator of the Pokhara Waterbird Census, said that habitat improvement, regular monitoring and conservation-focused programmes are urgently needed in Dipang, Gunde and Khaste lakes.

He also stressed that lakes and wetlands are vital for biodiversity and nature-based tourism, and called for strong coordination among local governments, concerned agencies and local communities.
