Kulung language page launched in Gorkhapatra

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec. 3: Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel has said that the elections for the House of Representatives, scheduled for March 5, 2026, will be held as announced. 

Speaking at the inauguration of the new multilingual page in Gorkhapatra Daily in the Kulung language in Gokaneshwor-3, Kathmandu on Tuesday, Minister Kharel urged all Nepali citizens to take responsibility for ensuring the success of the upcoming elections. 

Elections are the foundation of democracy and are critical for establishing good governance in the country, he added. Highlighting the ongoing campaign to build an inclusive Nepal, Minister Kharel called for unity in the nation’s development.

Minister Kharel said that Nepal is a country made up of diverse ethnicities, languages, and communities, with each group’s language, costume, and culture being a source of pride and identity. 

He stated, “The campaign to build an inclusive Nepal has begun, and the addition of the Kulung language page in Gorkhapatra is like adding a brick to the house called Inclusive Nepal. This effort requires everyone’s participation.”

Minister Kharel reiterated that Nepal’s strength lies in its diversity. He stated that the country’s various ethnicities, languages, and cultures are a source of pride and national identity. 

Speaking at the event, Ministry Secretary Radhika Aryal emphasised that the inclusion of the Kulung language page in Gorkhapatra would ensure the preservation and recognition of the community’s identity. 

She called it a historic initiative that contributes significantly to the inclusive Nepal campaign. She also advised making the page engaging and readable, as journalism today becomes history tomorrow. Chandra Singh Kulung, President of the Nepal Kirat Kulung Language and Culture Promotion Association, welcomed Minister Kharel with a traditional Kulung cultural dress (Fega), highlighting the significance of the event.

Lal Bahadur Airi, the Managing Director of Gorkhapatra, spoke about the important role the newspaper plays in promoting national languages. 

He expressed confidence that the new Kulung language page would help in the preservation of the language. 

With the addition of this new page, Gorkhapatra now publishes content in 46 different languages, a remarkable feat facilitated by the Ministry of Communications and the Language Commission.

The mayor of Gokaneshwor Municipality, Deepak Kumar Risal, also pledged continued support for the preservation and promotion of language and culture, stressing that these are key components of the nation’s identity.

The ceremony, which was chaired by Junar Babu Basnet, Chief Editor of Gorkhapatra, saw expression of gratitude from various leaders, including Surya Kulung, Chairman of Mahakulung Rural Municipality, and Chandra Singh Kulung. 

They thanked both the government and the Gorkhapatra Corporation for their efforts in advancing the cause of linguistic and cultural preservation.
