By Nabin Subedi, Surkhet, Nov.7: An inmate under the custody of the District Police Office, Surkhet, died in the prison cell today.
Police confirmed the death of 35-year-old Gange Sunar of Birendranagar, Municipality-11, who is under custody on the crime of drug trafficking and narcotics.
"Sunar was found unconscious on Friday morning. He was immediately taken to the Karnali Province Hospital for treatment. He was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment," said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohan Jung Budhathoki, Spokesperson of the District Police Office, Surkhet.
Another inmate who was sleeping in the same prison cell called the police after Sunar failed to awake. After that, he was immediately taken to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead by the doctor.
According to the police, the deceased Sunar had been in custody for 78 days. His case had reached the government attorney's office four days ago and a court hearing was scheduled for Friday.
The CCTV footage has been thoroughly checked following the incident.
The footage shows Sunar going to the bathroom before going to bed, washing his head, and returning to the cell. He was woken up by his friends because of his snoring.
Police said they have launched a further investigation into the incident.
