Kathmandu, Aug 8: Acting Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh stressed the need for protecting the constitutionally ensured rights to indigenous community.
At a programme organized on the 31st World Indigenous Day, the Acting PM viewed as the constitution granted many rights to indigenous people, so there is no option but to protect and fulfill these rights.
Singh, who is also the Minister for Urban Development, mentioned that while he was in government, the Congress implemented the provisions related to the rights of the indigenous people as per the commitment made in the party manifesto. Significant presence of indigenous people in the country's policy-making level is still a need of hour, according to him.
Similarly, addressing the same event, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak pledged the effective enforcement of rights guaranteed to indigenous community for its development.
NC central member Dilman Pakhrin said indigenous people had played significant roles Nepal's democratic movements and revolutions.
In view of another central member Taraman Gurung, the coalition government of the Nepali Congress and UML should work in a way that the people realize change.
The programme was organized by an organization of indigenous people associated to the Nepali Congress.(RSS)
