BY SHALIGRAM NEPAL,Chitwan, July 24: Bharatpur Metropolitan City has completed its ambitious Integrated Urban Infrastructure Development Project, designed to transform the city into a more organised and aesthetically pleasing urban space. The project was implemented through the Dense Urban and Building Construction Office and was divided into three major components.

According to Office Chief Jhapat Bahadur Thapa, the construction began on February 22, 2023, and was completed by mid-March 2025, following a one-time deadline extension. The project was executed in three sections, focusing on economic development, physical infrastructure, and social development.

Under the economic development component, a modern market and a well-equipped bus park were constructed, alongside significant road development programmes. The physical infrastructure includes widened roads, footpaths, and culverts. However,  a designated site for religious ‘Aarti’ rituals on the Narayani Riverbank, could not be constructed due to a lack of appropriate land and the risk of flooding.

The initial budget approved for the project was Rs. 500 million. However, the construction contract was signed for Rs. 411.9 million, with 50 per cent of the budget allocated for physical construction and the remaining amount invested in income-generation and social infrastructure, informed Information Officer Drona Katuwal.

Road constructions were completed in areas like Baseni-Bypass, Shukranagar-Devisthan, and Patihani-Manglapur-Kandaghari. Roads that were once narrow and difficult for two-way traffic have now been widened to at least seven metres, improving vehicular movement and allowing local produce to reach markets with ease.

In the economic infrastructure section, Rs. 20 million was used to build a modern bus park in Devghatdham. According to the city office, this facility will promote local markets and income generation. Previously, Devghat lacked such infrastructure, causing issues during religious gatherings held in Shrawan (July/August), Magh (January/February), and other festivals.

Executive Director of the Devghat Area Development Committee, Sadan Baral, said that managing traffic during festivals was particularly challenging, which had now been resolved.

Chief of Chitwan District Traffic Police, Shantiraj Sharma, confirmed that the new bus park has significantly eased parking issues. During festivals, traffic management between Bharatpur’s Aaptari and Ramnagar routes has improved significantly.

Bharatpur Mayor Renu Dahal stated that the metropolis had made a leap in development infrastructure, including roads, public halls, sports grounds, and religious spaces. The integrated approach had helped address multiple community needs, ensuring improved connectivity and market access, especially for rural farmers, she added.

The contract for the Integrated Urban Infrastructure Project was awarded to Mahalaxmi Om Satya JV. While the overall project was completed at Rs. 382 million, the failure to construct the Aarti site due to land constraints resulted in slightly reduced final payments.
