Lawmakers urge govt to ensure quick rescue, compensation to disaster survivors

Kathmandu, June 28: The House of Representatives meeting held today was resonated with the demand of adequate measures for prompt rescue and compensation to the disaster survivors in the wake of monsoon being active across the country.     

Demanding time in the HoR meeting, the lawmakers reminded the government that Nepal is prone to natural disasters, warranting effective and smooth disaster preparedness.     

Arjun Narsing KC informed the House that a woman from Kakani rural municipality-1 of Nuwakot district died after she was swept away by a flooded stream, while another male was injured seriously in the incident. He demanded compensation to the victim family and proper treatment to the injured ones. KC also pointed out the need of better coordination among province and local levels.     

Bimala Subedi and Hit Bahadur Tamang also underscored the need of strong coordination and collaboration among stakeholders including multi-tier governments. In addition to human loss, livestock and agricultural damages were also significant in different parts, so proper compensation and relief are required, they stressed.     

Ramhari Khatiwada expressed plight that various roads and highways were blocked and damaged with landslides trigged by the rainfall. "Asare bikas (construction works intensified at the end of fiscal year) has further worsened the situation," he said, wondering whether the Home Ministry had made adequate preparation to cope with the disaster by minimizing loss across the country.     

"It was saddening to hear the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl from Bhotekoshi rural municipality-6 of Sindhupalchowk district," said Madhav Sapkota, adding the culprit must be nabbed at the earliest and brought to justice. The victim family needs psychosocial counseling and relief, he demanded.     

According to Prakash Jwala, it was wrong and against law to mobilize Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force persons for the security of former ministers, political leaders and businesspersons against law. Details on number of security persons mobilized for such people need to be made public, Jwala demanded.     

Thakur Prasad Gaire appreciated the improvement in SEE result. The School Education Bill needs to be passed with some correction to ensure quality education, he reminded.     

Mukta Kumari Yadav made aware the parliament about the death of Sansa Sada, spouse of artist from Janakpur, Abhinas Jha. She also demanded probe on it.(RSS)
