Woman rescued from car that fell into Bishnumati River

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, June 27: A video has surfaced on a social media showing the rescue of a woman who fell into the Bishnumati River in Kathmandu along with her car late on Wednesday night.

According to the Kathmandu District Police Office, the incident occurred around 10:15 pm near the Baniyatar Bridge in Tokha Municipality-8. The car with the woman in it was swept away was successfully rescued through a joint effort by Nepal Police and locals.

Locals informed the police after spotting a vehicle bearing registration number Ba. Pra. 01-031 Cha 6141 floating downstream near the Bishnumati River close to Grande Hospital. Responding swiftly, a police team, with help from residents, managed to rescue the woman safely.

The rescued woman has been identified as 34-year-old Bhawana Oli, originally from Tulsipur, Dang, and currently residing in Tokha, Kathmandu. The car was reportedly driven by its owner 35-year-old Ankush Singh, a native of Shuklaphanta Municipality-1, Kanchanpur, now living in Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu. Singh reportedly exited the vehicle immediately after it fell into the river.

According to Kathmandu Police Spokesperson and Superintendent of Police (SP) Apil Raj Bohora, three police personnel and two locals sustained injuries during the rescue operation. 

“All five individuals received treatment at Green City Hospital in Basundhara and were discharged on Thursday morning,” said SP Bohora.

The vehicle was carried by the floodwaters until it got stuck under the Baniyatar Bridge, where rescuers were able to reach the woman. The car was retrieved from the river with the help of a crane Wednesday midnight.

SP Bohora confirmed that the rescue involved 45 police personnel, including 20 officers led by DSP Niranjan Thapa and 25 from the Disaster Management Police Office.
