Speaker and NA Chair's messages on World Press Freedom Day

Kathmandu, May 3: Speaker of the House of Representatives, Devraj Ghimire, has said the Parliament will always remain aware and vigilant so that the press freedom is not undermined.    


He expressed this determination in a message of best wishes extended to the media persons, the media, journalists, leaders advocating for the freedom of the press and expression and the general public on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day 2025 today.    


"The Constitution of Nepal has guaranteed the freedom of the press and expression as the fundamental right. The guarantee of press freedom is the soul of the constitution and it is the responsibility of the Parliament also to protect this," the Speaker said in his message.    


Stating press freedom is not only the right of journalists but it is also the people's right to be well-informed, the Speaker emphasized that truth, accountability and good governance can be established in society only through press freedom.


He added that the World Press Freedom Day is an important occasion for serious debate on the promotion and defending freedom of press and expression, and on allied topics.    


Similarly, National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal has, in a message of best wishes on the occasion, called attention of the parties concerned to practically implement the constitutional and legal provisions made to ensure freedom of press and expression.    


Paying tributes to all the journalist martyrs who laid down their lives in the struggle for freedom of press and expression at different times, the Chairman of the upper house of the Federal Parliament expressed the belief that this day would inspire the state to protect the freedom of press and expression and also inspire journalists to pursue true, fair, ethical and responsible journalism.   (RSS)
