BY A STAFF REPORTER,Kathmandu, May 3: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is going to organise the ‘Skill Fair 2025’ at Tundikhel, Kathmandu, starting May 21, aiming to engage 2,082 participants.
On the occasion of International Labour Day, KMC Mayor Balendra Shah on Thursday announced the fair and pointed out the importance of building a skilled workforce to ensure secure employment, increase productivity and support national economic growth.
The fair is part of KMC’s ongoing ‘Employment and Income Growth, Prosperous Kathmandu’ programme, launched in fiscal year 2023/24. The initiative targets training 15,000 youths and helping at least 5,000 secure jobs or become self-employed. The event aims to provide training to unskilled individuals and upgrade the skills of those with basic training, ensuring their readiness for the labour market.
The first edition of the fair, held last year, saw 68,866 applicants. Although the initial target was 2,081 trainees, a total of 2,575 received training. Many have since entered the workforce or started small businesses. For those still seeking employment, KMC is collaborating with industries to provide on-the-job training.
The fair also seeks to address the gap between skilled labour supply and market demand. With many youths opting for foreign employment due to limited local opportunities, the programme hopes to reduce labour migration by showcasing job prospects within Nepal.
The fair will offer training in 30 professions across 10 sectors, based on labour market research.
