blog

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Feb. 22: Musical event Paleti, which is held on the last Friday of every English month, will feature a musical family from Darjeeling this month.

For this month’s event, composer Chandan Lomjel has composed melodies for the songs of Norden Rumba, a celebrated lyricist from Darjeeling.

These songs will be performed by popular singers Daisy Baraily and Bimochana Lomjel.

Paleti has been running for the past 20 years, but was halted for a few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and was revived last month.

Norden Rumba is a well-established name in the Nepali literary world of Darjeeling.

Born in 1949 in Darjeeling, lyricist Rumba died at the age of 40.

One of his well-known songs, ‘Mera Sabai Rat Aba Mat Haru Bhay’,  was composed by Chandan Lomjel and sung by the legendary Narayan Gopal.

Similarly, songs like ‘Phul Lai Sodhe’ sung by Aruna Lama, ‘Gaine Dailai Sunakesariko Kesh and  ‘Shubhakamaana Khali Khali Dinelai Dani Bhanera Jadai Chhu’ were also penned by Norden Rumba.

Additionally, Daisy Baraily has lent her voice to ‘Kati Bagyo Kati Bagyo, Pulmuni Pani Resham’, composed by Chandan Lomjel.

The popular Nepali folk-rock band Nepathya also performed ‘Kasailai Sodhe Kun Ho Timro Gaun’, another creation of Norden Rumba.

This month’s Paleti will feature some of Rumba’s unreleased songs that have never been recorded before.

Chandan Lomjel, who first participated in Paleti in 2006, said, “Paleti’s goal of preserving the works of veteran creators inspired me to join once again.”

Just like Chandan, Daisy Baraily, who first performed at Paleti in 2006, said, “Back then, I was unfamiliar with this event. But after that, I felt like returning, and I did from time to time.”

Paleti will take place on Friday, February 28, and Saturday, March 1 this year.
