By Amar Raj Naharki, Tanahun, Feb.19: Lack of water in Tanahun prison has caused a lot of trouble to prisoners, staff, and security personnel.
According to the prison administration, the problem is that only 20,000 liters of water is being supplied daily in the prison, while it requires 40,000 liters of water per day.
Narayan Prasad Adhikari, Acting Chief of Tanahun Jail, said that we have been facing difficulty in maintaining sanitation and hygiene in line with water shortage as the prison holds twice more than its capacity.
The official said, "We are facing a water crisis as we get 20,000 liters less than the daily requirement."
The official said that water management is being done by digging wells on the banks of the Madi River, however, the water level in the river is dipping causing the water level in the well to go down as well.
He said that a new well is being dug out of the Rs. 2 million budget allocated by the Department of Prison to increase water capacity.
Water brought from the banks of the Madi and Seti rivers is used for bathing, washing clothes, cleaning and toilets.
Four taps have been installed inside the prison for drinking water through Damauli drinking water and consumer groups.
According to the official, there are 329 prisoners in total. Two baby girls also resides there with their mother in women cell.
