By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Jan. 31: Russian short story writer and playwright Anton Chekov's 165th birth anniversary was marked by organising an event in the capital recently.
At the event organised by the Russian House in Kathmandu in collaboration with the Nepal-Russian Literary Society (NRLS), the Librarian of the Russian House, Bhabana Nyepane, presented a short of Chekhov’s works.
Writer, General Secretary of NRLS and vice-president of Mitra Kunj, Ram Bindu Shrestha, spoke about Chekhov's writing tendency, focusing on his famous satirical story “Death of a Clerk”.
Writer Roshan Sherchan expressed his deep impression of Chekhov's works. He highly appreciated Chekhov's ability to lively convey the enormous sorrow within a person.
New NRLS President Vishnu Bahadur Singh emphasised the importance of the event for strengthening cultural ties between Nepal and Russia.
At the function, Director of the Russian House Anton Maslov presented a certificate to Ram Bindu Shrestha, sent by the Russian Writers' Union, Moscow City Organisation as a symbol of recognition of his contribution to fostering literary relations between two countries.
"Such functions play an important role in broadening horizons and strengthening friendship between peoples of Nepal and Russia," said Maslov.
At the event, a screening of the animated film 'Kashtanka' was also held.
Chekhov was born in Russia on January 29, 1860, and passed away on July 15, 1904.
He is considered one of the master storytellers of the world. He had written about 600 short stories and some plays. Out of them, about 100 stories and four plays are world-famous.
