By Siraj Khan,Nepalgunj, Jan. 26: Banke district has witnessed 135 road accidents in the past three months, resulting in 20 fatalities.

According to the District Traffic Police Office, Banke, these accidents have also left 21 people seriously injured and 165 others with minor injuries.

According to the statistics, eight people lost their lives in 20 accidents during Kartik (October/November), with seven people seriously injured and 17 sustaining minor injuries.

Similarly, 40 accidents in Mangsir (November/December) claimed three lives, caused 11 serious injuries and left 38 with minor injuries. During Poush (December/January), 75 accidents resulted in nine deaths, three serious injuries and 65 minor injuries.

The Traffic Police Office attributed the rise in accidents and casualties from mid-December to mid-January to heavy fog and mist, reducing visibility. Following the spike in accidents, the office issued public notices urging drivers to reduce speeds and exercise caution.

In addition to accident management, the Traffic Police took action against 8,775 vehicles violating traffic rules over the past three months, collecting revenue of Rs. 7.518 million.

In response to the growing number of accidents, the District Traffic Police Office has increased its awareness campaigns. Over the past three months, it organised 591 traffic awareness programmes across the district, benefiting 29,677 individuals.

Pushkar Pant, Chief of the District Traffic Police Office, said that these programmes aimed to educate the public about traffic regulations and foster awareness. He also highlighted efforts to prevent accidents caused by fog and mist by encouraging drivers to use reflective stickers and reduce speeds during nighttime travel.
