Siraha, Dec 20: The 35th International Maithili Conference and Siraha Literary Sangam kicked off in the Siraha district headquarters on Friday.
Former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai inaugurated the four-day conference on the premises of the Chandra Namuna Secondary School.
On the occasion, he said Maithili folklores and dialects are ahead in terms of its historic essence even though Maithili is the second most spoken language in Nepal.
He also expressed his concern that though the Madhes region is culturally enriched and geographically accessible, it lags behind in terms of socio-economic development indicators.
He expressed his belief that the event will contribute to the development and recognition of historical Maithili literature, art and culture.
According to programme coordinator Ramrijhan Yadav, the Sunday's and Monday's sessions of the conference will take place in Golbazar. As he said, the speakers will send time to discuss topics concerning economic, political, social, health, agricultural, education and foreign employment aspects in the region.
