Law, incentives for donating organs of brain-dead in offing: Health Minister Paudel

By Nisha Rai, Dharan, Nov 11: Minister for Health and Population Pradip Paudel has said that the process of brain death for treatment purposes has been under preparation.

At a discussion programme held in Nepali Congress party office of Dharan Sub-metropolis, the Health Minister said that there will be provision of providing Rs. 2 lakh to the family that gives consent to remove vital organs from the one who is brain-dead. The hospital which informs about the brain death and consent of the family to donate organs will be provided Rs. 75 thousand, according to the minister.

Vital organs such as eyes, kidney, lungs, heart and lever can be extracted from a brain death person within 24 hours for transplantation to other person, and this can saves lives of many persons.

Organs will be collected first and application received afterwards for transplant and the services will be handed on the first-come-first serve basis, according to the minister.

Minister Paudel said that legal provision was also under formulation for those who want to donate their organs after death and thus earn holiness.

He said that 35 different types of medicines for children below 14 years of age will be provided free of cost from within a month and that four hospitals will be designated to provide treatment of cancer to below 14-year children free of cost. That too within a month.
