Govt. to do everything for rescue, relief operations: PM Oli

Kathmandu, Sept. 30: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the government will leave no stone unturned to rescue the disaster-hit people and provide them with relief support. The PM has termed the recent flooding and landslides as 'unimaginable'.     

Talking to the media at the VVIP lounge of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) upon his arrival after taking part in the 79th United Nations General Assembly on Monday, PM Oli said rescue of the affected ones is ongoing from the government and public levels. "The government is with them (the victims). I want to assure them that the government will do everything it can to assist them in this disaster, provide them relief and rescue them," the PM added.     

On the occasion, the PM assured to effectively run the rescue operations and thanked the citizens for their restraint in the time of disasters.     

The PM also extended condolences to those who lost their lives in disasters and wished for speedy recovery for the injured.     

"The country suffered immensely from the unimaginable flooding and landslides when I was out of the country. Several people died; some are still missing and many others are injured. I express my heartfelt condolences to the deceased and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured people," PM Oli told the media.     

On the occasion, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amrit Rai, read out the press note released following the arrival of Prime Minister Oli, and said "All the events attended by the Prime Minister have been fruitful."     

He shared about the PM's address in the General Assembly and participation in various important bilateral meetings. Prime Minister Oli had led the Nepali delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly and also to the 'Summit of the Future' held in New York prior to the UNGA. Prime Minister Oli addressed the main session of the summit as the chair of the group of least developed countries.     

"I welcomed 'Pact for the Future, Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations' passed by the summit on behalf of the group of least developed countries," Prime Minister Oli said in the statement, "In my statement, I suggested that we emphasize the effective implementation of such pacts. I expressed the belief that the pack would also solve the problems of poverty, hunger, inequality and climate change which the least developed countries are suffering from."     

The Prime Minister left here on Friday, September 20 to attend the 79th session of the UNGA (September 24-30) that was held at the UN Headquarters in New York of the United States of America. He addressed the UNGA on September 26.     

The general debate of the 79th session of the General Assembly was held with the theme of "Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations".     

He addressed the Conference of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and the second High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and participated in other events.     

He held bilateral meetings with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi including other leaders on the sidelines of the Session.     

Other members of the PM's delegation comprised his spouse Radhika Shakya, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana Deuba, PM's principal political advisor Bishnu Rimal, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, and senior government officials.(RSS)
