Transitional justice bill gets National Assembly’s approval

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Aug.23:The National Assembly unanimously passed the Transitional Justice bill, without any amendments, during its meeting on Thursday. 

The bill, which was earlier passed by the House of Representatives, will come into effect after presidential approval.

During the National Assembly session, Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ajay Kumar Chaurasia introduced the bill, which received extensive support. This legislative move aims to advance the peace process in Nepal by addressing transitional justice issues.

Krishna Prasad Sitaula, leader of the Nepali Congress, highlighted the importance of national unity for Nepal's prosperity and international competitiveness. Sitaula urged all political parties to commit to fulfilling the resolutions for political, economic, social, and cultural changes, asserting that national unity is crucial for advancing Nepal's development and peace process.

Similarly, National Assembly member Bam Dev Gautam highlighted the bill's significance in ensuring justice for victims, advocating for a victim-cantered transitional justice framework. 

Meanwhile, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, leader of the Maoist Centre parliamentary party, acknowledged the political achievements stemming from the Maoist armed struggle and stressed the need to institutionalise these changes and continue progress towards development.

Likewise, Bhagwati Neupane, Chief Whip of the CPN-UML, called for cooperative efforts to complete the remaining tasks of the peace 

process. She urged all political parties to unite in resolving transitional justice issues and wrapping up the 

peace process, underscoring the need for collective action at this critical juncture.
