Aug 4 (DhakaTribune): Mobile internet has been shut down again on Sunday, on the instructions of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

The BTRC has announced that the 4G network will remain off until further notice. During this period, only 2G services will be available for making calls.

When contacted for further details, BTRC Chairman Mohiuddin Ahmed declined to comment, saying that he was in a meeting.

In a statement, Grameenphone said: “The authorities have shut down the mobile internet. We are in continuous communications with the relevant authorities regarding this issue.”

Officials from mobile phone operators had earlier confirmed that they have received directives from the government to shut down 4G services, media reported.

This decision, reportedly aimed at addressing ongoing national issues, was swiftly communicated to all mobile operators.

Telecommunication sources indicate that the directive to disable 4G services has been uniformly issued across all mobile operators.

However, there has been no decision yet regarding the status of broadband services.

Various sources have confirmed that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) connected to international internet gateways have not received any directives to control or limit internet access at this time.

Authorities are yet to provide an official statement detailing the reasons behind this decision and its expected duration.
