Kathmandu, July 4: Kala Lamsal has become a household name among folk duet enthusiasts, captivating audiences with her melodious voice and mesmerising performances for over two decades.
She has been fascinated by folk music since childhood. She was involved in music while she was studying at school.
During her school days, she actively participated in numerous folk duet programmess, securing prizes and increasing her fan base.
She said that she always wears traditional Nepali attire while performing on stage to promote authentic Nepali culture. She started recording songs in 2008 and has sung over 100 songs over the years so far.
She has also collaborated with popular singers like Pashupati Sharma, Khuman Adhikari, Shiva Hamal, Badri Pangeni, and Ramesh BC. She has worked with almost all the well-known folk duet singers.
She specialises in folk songs and recorded ‘Marna Paye Birsinthey Ma’ in 2008.
She took a break from music for around eight years while working as a government employee. However, she remained passionate about music. Despite her involvement in the government job, she eventually left to pursue her music career full-time.
Though her passion drove her into music, her family was against her pursuing this path, believing that during her school and college life, a music career was not the best choice. They wanted her to follow a more secure profession. However, destiny led her to folk duet music.
She has now performed in about 10 countries and is busy with various festivals across Nepal.
Her next international performance will be in the UK.
The song “Chuche Chuche Raichhau Hauli Pakkai Bahuni Nakai Hera Thaha Huni” in ‘Roila Bhaka’ helped her gain recognition as Kala Lamsal in the folk duet scene.
Later, she sang ‘Patali,’ which further boosted her career in music. The success of ‘Patali’ led to five series of the song. Her folk duet songs like ‘Nakai Herda Thaha Huni,’ ‘Patali,’ ‘Aina Heri Heri,’ ‘Dhanko Chamal Dhanakai Chiura,’ ‘Lahure Aayen,’ ‘Tiriri Murali Bajyo,’ and ‘Saili Salala’ are some of her hits.
Recognised for her significant contributions to the Nepali folk duet sector, she has received multiple awards and honours.
Lamsal is also a central committee member of the National Folk Duet Academy.
Currently, she is focusing on Teej and Dashain songs. “Nepali folk music is thriving, and folk singers are gaining recognition not only in Nepal but also in international shows,” remarked singer Lamsal.
