Kathmandu, Jan 12: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari said that the basis for keeping intact national dignity and sovereignty was laid by the unification bid initiated and led by Prithvi Narayan Shah.
In a message she issued on the
occasion of National Unity Day-2080 BS today, the former President argued that
Nepal falls among one of the old independent countries due to the unification
bid spearheaded by the late king Shah.
"We are proud to be the
citizens of the country that was never colonized by any countries. We have been
able to embark on the journey to current democratic republic Nepal standing on
the baseline made by the unification bid," the former President
asserted.
Bhandari, in her message, expressed
her honour to those brave ancestors who sacrificed their lives for building
unified and indivisible Nepal and to safeguard dignity.
According to her, a broad baseline
has been prepared to amplify the geographical unification bid initiated by
Prithvi Narayan Shah thereby conserving Nepal's unique cultures, languages and
traditions, and building a strong national unity through the emotional
unification of the Nepali citizens.
She viewed that it was our
responsibility to build a nation that is sovereign, self-reliant and having a
strong national economy. "I am confident that the Day would inspire one
and all to discharge epochal obligations and to further strengthen nationality,
national unity and sovereignty and to attain prosperity for the citizens,"
the former President stated in the message. (RSS)
